Presenter:
Dr. Peter Walker will talk about developing the school and the campus as an integrated project of building a fully sustainable campus, creating an experiential learning environment where, experimentation, failure, and problem solving are at the heart of the educational experience.
Before the presentation (6:00 – 7:00), network, grab some food, tour the campus and talk to the faculty and staff who run it. Featured will be:
- The aquaculture lab: fish farming, hydroponics, linked fish and plant systems.
- The solar tunnel: organic forming, integrated pest management, supporting local farmers and food businesses.
- The Energy systems: geothermal loops, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, and micro-turbines.
Dr. Peter Walker is the Dean of the Falk School of Sustainability and Environment at Chatham University in Pittsburgh. In this role, he is building a new School, and a new fully-sustainable campus at Eden Hall, north of Pittsburgh, using an activist approach to education which starts by engaging students in problem solving in the sustainability field.
Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, he spent 12 years as the Director of the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University, one of the world’s premier centers for the study of humanitarian crises. Dr. Walker joined Tufts from a 25-year career in disaster and humanitarian crisis management around the world. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
