Integrating Design Thinking on Your Projects

In today’s business environment, project managers need new tools and models to operate in a more flexible, discovery-driven world. Design Thinking has emerged as a successful methodology that teams use to approach problem-solving and delivery of innovative solutions that delight their customers. This presentation explores the intersection between Design Thinking and Project Management and identifies the pitfalls and benefits of incorporating design on projects.

This presentation explores the intersection between Design Thinking and projects and will provide participants with a high-level overview of Design Thinking methods and tools. Case studies are used to show concretely how to integrate design methods into projects with lessons learned and unique outcomes.

At the conclusion of the presentation, participants should be able to describe the benefits of incorporating design methodologies on projects for increased customer alignment and business impact, and be able to illustrate multiple design-thinking tools that could benefit current or future projects.

Bruce Gay, PMP, has over 20 years of experience managing programs and customer relationships across healthcare Information Technology, telecommunications, and defense industries. Currently a Senior Program Manager at UPMC Enterprises (the commercialization arm of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), Bruce manages a multi-million dollar program to develop the next generation of Radiology Informatics systems. Over the past decade, he has managed creative teams that incorporated UX Design & Design Thinking methodologies into their product development processes.

Bruce has presented at both regional and international conferences, including the PMI Global Conferences in Chicago and Los Angeles and the University of Maryland 2018 Project Management Symposium. Bruce enjoyed volunteering for the 2018 PMI Pittsburgh Professional Development Day and looks forward to helping with the 2019 event.
